This program is offered to second graders across PEC's service territory. A PEC representative goes into each classroom and makes a safety presentation to these students. Following this program, the students are given a coloring book, a certificate of completion and a badge proclaiming them "Safety Rangers".
Sixth graders participate each year in PEC's Safety Poster Contest.
After a PEC employee presents safety information to the classes, the students
complete posters to be judged in this competition. Ten district winners
are selected, and from those 10, three overall winners are determined.
The district winners receive $50 savings bonds and the overall winners
are awarded $100 savings bonds.
PEC is proud to sponsor two academic tournaments for the high school students in its area each year. These invitational tournaments are held on the campus of East Central University. Both the top scoring freshman and the top scoring sophomore in each tournament receive a $50 savings bond. The top scoring juniors in each tournament receive their choice of an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in the summer to participate in the Youth Tour, which is sponsored by rural electric cooperatives across the nation OR a $500 scholarship from PEC to ECU, which the East Central University Foundation will match with an additional $500. The top scoring senior in each tournament will receive a $1,000 scholarship from PEC to ECU, again matched by an additional $1,000 from the ECU Foundation. These scholarships will be awarded 1/2 during the student's first semester and 1/2 during their second semester. However, the maximum award during any one semester will be $1,000, which could extend scholarship payments into a student's third semester if the student won PEC's Academic Tournament as both a junior and a senior. This scholarship will be in addition to any other academic scholarships from the university for which the student qualifies. The student must meet all other eligibility requirements* of the Foundation in order to receive the Foundation's portion of these scholarships. It is a privilege for PEC to have this opportunity to recognize the area's brightest students through these annual academic tournaments.
* ECU Foundation eligibility requirements will include a minimum GPA of 3.4 and a minimum ACT of 23.
