People's Electric Cooperative offers uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems by American Power Conversion to alleviate problems caused by power blinks. A UPS is simply a battery backup for various pieces of electronic equipment in a home or business. They work much the way that a small 9V battery keeps an alarm clock on in the event of a power outage. UPS systems are designed to keep power on for 10-15 minutes. Of course, the number of pieces of equipment plugged in will have a direct effect on how long the batteries will sustain power. Primarily a UPS is designed to carry the equipment through power blinks, and should a prolonged outage occur, sustain power long enough for you to shut everything off properly.

The Back-UPS 650 ES is available from PEC and can be
added to the PEC bills of qualified members (subject to credit approval).
The 650 VA unit, (which will handle a Pentium PC and several peripherals) is
available for $85.00 plus tax, or $5.00 per month for 20 months. Should you choose
the monthly payment option, the payment amount will appear on your PEC
bill each month.
Most electronic equipment will have some type of power requirement rating. UPS systems are sold based on a VA rating. For example, to determine the VA for your computer, multiply the A (amps) times V (volts); for a tape drive multiply the A (amps) times V (volts); and for a monitor, multiply the W (watts) times 1.4. This will give you the power requirements for your entire computer system. So, if you compute your electrical requirements to be 550 VA, the Back-UPS 650 will fit your needs. Of course, you can give us a call and we will help calculate these requirements!
PEC keeps a supply of the 650 UPS systems at our office located at 1600 N. Country Club in Ada. Our offices are open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
